When a skunk gets scared it emits a spray that has a very strong, nasty odor to it. This is a big part of the skunk's defense system. If you happen to get this odor on you, it will stay for a long time. You can't simply take a bath and wash your clothes to remove this scent, you'll need to take more drastic measures.
Make a solution that works
If you have already tried the popular tomato paste remedy then you have more than likely come to the conclusion that it doesn't work as well as you may have expected. Therefore, you'll want to move on to a more powerful solution that fully removes the odor.
To make a good skunk odor removal solution:
Mix together about a quarter cup of baking soda, a quart of peroxide and a generous teaspoon of liquid dish soap. Put this solution on generously and rub it in as if it were a body wash or shampoo. Leave the mixture on for a few minutes to give it a chance to do its job. If you rinse it off too quickly then it won't do a good job of removing all the odor.
Rinse the solution off and check to see that the odor is gone. You may need to put a second application of the solution on if you still smell a slight hint of the skunk still. Apply and rinse the solution just as you did with the first application.
This solution can also be used to remove the odor of skunk spray off your pets as well. When you rub the solution into their fur, try to keep them from shaking while you give the solution time to soak in and do its job. Once you have rinsed it out, then you can allow them to shake the water from their coat.
Keeping skunks away
The best way to prevent a skunk from spraying is to keep them away in the first place. You want to make sure you keep fruit from your fruit trees picked up off the ground and pick it off the trees as soon as it's ready. Also, keep your pet's food inside at night. Consider installing a motion activated sprinkler that will soak them if they trigger it. If you continue having problems with skunks on your property, then you should call out a pest control company (such as Choice Pest Control) to come help you with your skunk issue.
